By Jennie Tanner
The overall prime cattle price for the week ended 18 January was 330.9p/kg, very slightly up (+0.1p) on the previous week. There were some differences in the trade, with steer and heifer values steady or increasing, while young bull prices dropped.
The overall prime heifer price increased 0.5p to 333.1p/kg. Female cattle meeting the R3 and R4L spec moved higher (+1.5p and +2.3p) demonstrating the preference in the market for in-spec animals. Similarly, the overall steer price went down very slightly (-0.2p) but animals meeting the R3 and R4L spec saw slight increases, up 0.3p and 1.7p respectively.
Estimated prime cattle slaughter was up just 100 head on the week. More heifers came forward, which compensated for fewer steers and young bulls.
The deadweight cow price rose in the week, up by 5.1p, to 223.4p/kg. Those meeting the -O4L specification increased by a slightly smaller 3.0p to achieve 239.8p/kg, the highest figure since the beginning of October 2019. The number of cows coming forward was up 700 head week-on-week.
