Herbal leys panel discussion 2: Establishment – looking forward to 2021

AHDB is supporting a panel discussion with the British Grassland Society, on practical advice for establishing herbal leys in 2021 and beyond. The panel will include:

• Kate Still, Soil Association and FAB farmers facilitator
• Robert Thornhill, dairy farmer and Nuffield Scholar
• Dafydd Parry Jones, organic beef and sheep farmer and Farming Connect mentor

During the first panel discussion in July, attendees voted for establishment as one of the key areas for focus in the future sessions therefore in this session the panel will share their experience of establishing herbal leys via short presentations and a Q&A session to help you prepare for 2021. Topics will include:

• Suitable soils, topography, temperature tolerance
• Variety selection criteria
• Establishment methods
• Overcoming establishment challenges
• Management post-establishment – weed control and the first grazing/cut
