Deadweight cattle prices gain further ground

GB cattle prices inched up again in the week ending 14 August. The all-prime deadweight average was 407.9p/kg, about half a penny more than the week before. Within that, heifers had most of the running; overall prices for those went up 1.1p to 408.2p/kg. Prices for male cattle, however, broadly held their ground. Overall steers and young bulls averaged 409.2p/kg and 400.2p/kg respectively.
Estimated prime slaughter in the week ending 14 August was 30,300 head, 700 fewer than last week. This reflects some anecdotal evidence that processors are having to work hard to find cattle.
Cow slaughter in the week ending 14 August was 11,000 head, 250 more than the week before. Overall cow prices averaged 294.7p/kg, up nearly half a penny on the previous week. Those meeting the –O4L specification averaged 317.0p/kg, a penny more than the week before.
