Lamb prices start the year strongly
Thursday, 9 January 2020
In something of a repeat of 2019, sheep prices started the year strongly in 2020. During the week ending 4 January, the GB deadweight OSL SQQ averaged 450.1p/kg, 12.1p higher than where last year’s price closed. Compared to the five-year average, the quote stands more than 40p higher. The market for cull ewes is also particularly buoyant, with prices in the week around £80/head. Industry reports suggest demand for lambs is currently outstripping supply, supporting the cull price.
Estimated clean sheep slaughterings for the week were recorded at 182,200 head, down 7.5% year-on-year, and not yet back at more normal weekly levels.
In the week ending 8 January, the GB liveweight OSL SQQ stood at 208.66p/kg. Auction market throughputs for the week totalled 119,100 head, as the trade gets back into the swing of things after Christmas.
