Mixed week for GB cattle prices, but annual growth remains

Wednesday, 26 January 2022

The GB all-prime average deadweight cattle price recorded another slip in the week ending 22 January, down 0.7p to 406.5p/kg. All categories experienced declines, with young bulls losing the most ground overall (-1.6p).

Despite the slip in the overall all-prime measure, it still stood 29p above the price recorded in the same week a year ago.

Prime cattle slaughter remained lower than a year ago at an estimated 29,900 head for the week, also down 1.5% from the week before. Reports suggest that staff absence is still causing capacity issues in some plants, and regional differences may be driving prices at a more local level.

Conversely, cull cow prices overall enjoyed a 6.3p jump to average 273.6p/kg overall for the same week. The measure was nearly 44p ahead of the price recorded a year ago. Estimated slaughter of cows at GB abattoirs was 11,300 head for the week, down 1.8% on the previous week and down 5% year-on-year.
