Another similar week for cattle prices
Thursday, 30 September 2021
By Bethan Wilkins
The general steady picture that has developed in the prime deadweight trade over the last couple of weeks continued in the week ended 25 September. Prices remain at exceptionally high levels across the board. The GB all-prime average stood at 410.2p/kg, just marginally higher than the week before.
Estimated prime slaughter numbers increased 7% on the week, to 31,800 head. Despite this, reports continue to suggest there are some difficulties with staff shortages in plants.
Cull cow prices in the same week came under further pressure, with the overall average falling by 6.5p to 279.4p/kg. There was also a 7% increase in the number of cows coming through compared to the previous week, with throughput estimated at 11,500 head. Seasonally, cow prices tend to fall at this time of year. Nonetheless, where processing capacity is at a premium, this may be particularly negatively affecting demand for cows, contributing to the downward price pressure.
